"I have dream" from Martin Luther King Jr are words we have all heard at sometime or another. He had a dream and wasn't afraid to share it. God has given each of us a dream but unfortunately the world has become so full of disruptions that we can easily become waylaid from our intended path.
The woman at the well is not one that we would jump up and say God should or could use her but she was not only touched by the words of Jesus but she single handedly helped bring her town to the Lord.
This lady (and for the time, I use the term loosely) had three strikes against her.
She had been married not only once, not twice but five times and was now living with another man. Secondly, the times in which she lived did not accept women as an equal but that of a much lower status. The final strike for this lady was that she was a Samaritan and was very much despised by the Jews.
Yet, even with all of this she was willing to sit and have a discussion with Jesus (the longest ever to be recorded with any one person) and become so excited that she ran to tell everyone in town. I don't know if they thought she was crazy or what but they all came out to see and hear who this man Jesus was and what he was about. What a result!
We too can be used like this lady. Unsure of what you can do or how to do it? Let me help you. Here are the ABC's of how to be used by God.
A sk... The bible says you have not because you ask not James 4:2 We must not be afraid to take the time to ask God what it is that he wants us to do. It isn't arrogant or big headed to ask, it is very genuine and demonstrates a maturity of wanting to encourage and help others. If you are willing God can use and will use you in a way you may never expect.
B e filled with desire and faith... Before we do anything well for God or anyone we must have a desire to do it. We must also have faith in ourselves that we can do it. We are not walking alone in this, the Holy Spirit is right there alongside us helping us on every step of the way. Romans 12:11 tells us "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord."
C all out to God in prayer... The way we can find out about someone or what they want us to do is talk with them. The more you speak with them the more you learn and that is the same with God. The more we speak to him the more we will understand him and his ways. It is also a time that he can speak to us through our spirit. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6
D esignate time in the word. Just as we said with prayer the more time you spend reading or listening to his word the better you will come to know what God is really like. We are told that all of scripture is given by the inspiration of God -
2 Timothy 3:16, therefore we can be reassured that the words we read are really from the heart of God. Be sure not to compare your times to others. Pick the right time of day and amount of time that is right for you. There is no right or wrong we just need to read or hear it. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105
E xaltation... I love to spend time in worship. I always say that I can get lost in it and just feel so close to God. Worship gives us the opportunity to pour our hearts and demonstrate our love to God. "Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our maker!" Psalms 95:6
F aith steps: Just like how a young child learning to walk needs to have faith in the adult that they will keep hold of their hand, we too must have faith in God as we take our first steps out for him. It doesn't matter if you are not a pastor, bible scholar or a lay person that just came to know Jesus, tell him you are available and you never know when he will use you! Remember, he used the woman at the well in a might way; and who did not know him and was looked down upon become of her circumstances. "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
G ive God the glory: In everything we do the final step must be that all of the credit and the glory go to God. It is not our plan but his plan. It is not our works alone but his Holy Spirit that goes along with us as the helper. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
1 Corinthians 10:31
H elp… I know that I said this before but it is so important, remember that you are never alone on this journey. Before you were born God had a plan and purpose for your life and when Jesus left this earth he didn’t leave us alone but he sent a helper – the Holy Spirit to walk along beside us. So don’t be afraid because fear is not from God. Once you start working for God in whatever area you feel passionate about then you will be as encouraged as the person you think you are encouraging. Now let’s get ready to take that first step…. A little wobbly, that’s okay ask the Holy Spirit to take your hand, he is ready. Steady now and Go, I know you can do it.
Be blessed and encouraged
