Have you ever just met someone for the first time then be introduced  to others as their friend? Or have you met someone and thought they would be a friend yet you never to hear from them again? The word “friend” has become one that our society uses rather loosely. We say we have many friends when it comes to Facebook or twitter; or in that book club that meets every Monday but, what exactly does it mean to be a friend? Webster’s dictionary describes it as “one attached to another by affection or esteem.” The second definition may explain why we use this term so easily which is “ACQUAINTANCE.”

In the NIV bible the word “friend(s)” can be found 63 times in 58 verses. Throughout the bible, the term friend was used as an introduction; “Judah sent the kid goat by his friend” or “our good friend Quartus” or “about our friend Apollos”. John 14:26 in the Message, Peterson describes the coming of the Holy Spirit as that of a friend arriving. Jesus had those that he called friend such as Lazarus, who he tells his disciples "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. I'm going to wake him up." John 11:11. Jesus had twelve very special people that he called friends as well as disciples. He worked, lived, ate, and slept in the same quarters as these men while they traveled and witnessed to people with the word, their day-to-day actions, and many miracles.

Just as Jesus took the first step to demonstrate friendship, now we need to do the same. To have friend we must first be a friend. When I take my dog for a walk, he gets so excited to meet other dogs, and we say he has found his new best friend but even he has that one who is extra special and will leave all others to go and see.

Some of us will meet that special friend and hit it often immediately but most friendships take time to cultivate and to grow. A true friend will be there through thick and thin, be non-judgmental, and keep confidences. We can call them when we are troubled and need a shoulder to cry on, someone to laugh with, or pray with. Several years ago, I had a friend who was working in the same city I was living in but her heart was elsewhere. She had just gone through a nasty divorce and would go through bouts of depression.

Friends don't keep track of whose turn it is for attention. They trade off in giving each other the opportunity to be up front in a conversation and in life.

They understand, accept and are not jealous when that opportunity is their friends and not theirs. They are the one in the background genuinely cheering their friends on when it is their time to shine.

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment in the law was, he replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Then he continued to say “And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself”- Matthew 22:37-39. God wants us to be a friend and he wants us to be willing to do what he asks of us when he asks it. Corinthians 5:20 says we’re Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you.

Here is a little exercise for you to do. Think of 5 people either from work, your community or church and write their names down. Now, try to list five things that you know about them, especially things that not everyone would know. Next, answer the following questions as much as you can.

  1. What I like about you is ….
  2. You do these things so well ….
  3. I really like it when you ….

I did and it isn’t as easy as you think. That tells me that we need to try to practice being a real friend who cares for others. We need to reach out to others and really try to get to know them and be friendly with them. I am not saying we need to call everyone up each week and live on their doorsteps but to make sure that people we meet are made to feel that we really do care and that it isn’t just superficial. That is what Jesus would do.

What Is A Friend?

by Kit McCallum

A friend is someone you hold dear:
Someone who is always there, through thick and thin;
Someone who is only a phone call away.

A friend is someone you can always rely on:
Someone who is there to share your thoughts with;
Someone to listen, no matter the subject.

A friend is someone you can feel comfortable with:
Someone you can sit silently beside, without conversation;
Someone you do not need to fill the quiet moments with.

A friend is someone you can trust:
Someone who will guard your deepest secrets;
Someone who will never let you down.

A friend is someone who is not judgmental:
Someone who will gently offer advice and opinions,
Yet, someone who is not overbearing or critical.

A friend is someone who can keep you grounded:
Someone who can help you see through your obstacles;
Someone to shoulder you through life's trials.

A friend is someone who shares unconditionally:
Someone to laugh and to cry with;
Someone to lean on, through both the good and the bad.

A friend is someone you choose wisely,
For a friend is your own mirrored image:
Someone to compliment your own self;
Someone who indicates who you are as a person.

A friend.... is what you are to me.
