Encouraging Friends

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year that we allow ourselves to show others how we really feel about them. So now that it is behind us for another year we tend to slip back into our old pattern. Yet,we are called to show the love of Jesus everyday. Speaking to his disciples in John 13:34-35 Jesus said, “But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.

Many of us know these words, have said them, but don’t take the time to practice them.

This proves the point I just stated that many of us like these students have become so busy that we don’t see the opportunity God is putting in our path.

The Good Samaritan may have thought he was in a hurry but not so much that he couldn’t stop to care for the injured man. What we all need to do is to slow down, and take life a bit easier, so that we don’t miss the chance to show love, care, and compassion. Now you may say that is easy for me to say to slow down but can’t we spare a minute to help put that lady push her grocery cart to her car and maybe even put them in for her or give that teenager the extra fifty cents so he can have that hot

meal.

While in Calgary, I was driving to pick up my husband from an evening meeting and I saw a seemingly homeless man on the street corner with a sign. These signs are common in Calgary and I really didn’t take the time to read it because I knew he was asking for money. I did see the bottom words though which were God Bless You. The thought came into my mind on how convenient it was for him to use chose those words and work on our Christian sympathy. Since I was the first car at the light, I saw him until the light turned green which I prayed would hurry up so I could go. As I turned the corner, I felt the words from Matt 25:35 ring in my ears “for I was hungry and you gave Me food.” I felt God’s correction letting me know that I had just missed an opportunity to show his love to someone. I asked God if he really wanted me to do this tonight to give me another chance. Just after my husband got into our truck, there was a knock on the window. It was a man with a story of how he lost his wallet and needed help. He was looking for $27.60. God had given me that second chance and I knew we needed to help him. After listening to his story, we gave him the change we had and drove away. It was late and my

husband was tired from working all day and evening but I knew that we needed to take the time to help this man.

Later, God reminded me that I had encountered this man before. He was the same man that had come to the church where I worked and scammed me for money not once but twice. I smiled and thought it is okay because God called me to do it and we were able to obey.

This proves the point I just stated that many of us like these students have become so busy that we don’t see the opportunity God is putting in our path.

Let’s all remember the command that Jesus gave to us to love one another. This doesn’t mean we need to run up, hug everyone, and get gushy over them but it does mean that we need to be ready when God calls us to bless them. We never know when, where or how it will be happen but God will provide us with opportunities to show his great love. When Peter was speaking it was to wives but I think it holds true for all of us, he told them that their husbands would be won over with their pure and reverent lives not necessarily by discussion. In other words, sometimes our actions to others can sometimes say more than we ever could. Try it, you may never know whose life you are feeding into, and possible changing, but God does. Remember one plants, another waters and God gives the increase.
